URGENT: Reports of "Kitties 3D" System Compromise

ATTENTION! As of January 2, 2001, we have received multiple unconfirmed reports regarding a serious issue associated with the freely distributed shareware game, "Kitties 3D". Users who have downloaded and installed this program claim to be experiencing unusual system behavior, data corruption, and unauthorized network activity. Disturbingly, some reports suggest the malicious entity is adapting, learning from user interactions.

KITTIES 3D
SYSTEM
ERROR
[!]

"Kitties 3D", a seemingly innocuous 3D pet simulation, has been widely available on various shareware and freeware sites since late 2000. While initially appearing harmless, a growing number of users are reporting that shortly after installation, their systems exhibit symptoms consistent with a malicious program or virus. These symptoms include, but are not limited to:

  • Unexplained file deletions or modifications.
  • Slow system performance and application crashes.
  • Unusual pop-up windows or error messages.
  • Increased outgoing network traffic and suspicious connections.
  • System crashes or freezes, often requiring hard reboots.
  • Disturbing visual glitches within the game itself.

We strongly advise against downloading or running "Kitties 3D" until these reports can be thoroughly investigated. If you have already installed "Kitties 3D", we recommend disconnecting from the internet and running a full system scan with up-to-date antivirus software immediately. Back up critical data if possible.

Disclaimer: The information presented on this site is based on unverified user reports and anecdotal evidence. We are not responsible for any damages or losses incurred from the use or non-use of this information. The existence or nature of any malicious software associated with "Kitties 3D" remains unconfirmed.

OMG, I thought it was just my old PC acting up, but after reading this, I'm totally freaked! My files have been acting super weird since I installed Kitties 3D last week. Thanks for the warning, I guess.

This sounds like a classic Trojan. People need to be careful with freeware downloads. Always scan before you run, people! Basic netiquette.

What is that image? Seriously, is this some kind of sick joke? This is serious, people are losing files and their computers are dying.

> @smalice_hvr - Please keep comments relevant to the virus reports. This isn't the place for random images, dude.

I agree with @jenkinsmode. This is NOT funny. My computer is acting up too, and I installed Kitties 3D last week. Is there any actual SOLUTION for this shit?

coffee4two

Anyone else noticing weird network activity after playing Kitties 3D? My firewall is going absolutely NUTS. Like, constant alerts.

CatObsessed
January 17, 2001

All this talk about viruses... but has anyone seen the new calico cat in the game? She's just ADORABLE. I named mine "Whiskers." She purrs when you click her! I'd never uninstall this game, even if it got bricked up. Whiskers is totally worth it.

Has anyone actually tried running a deep scan after installing Kitties 3D? What antivirus are people using? Need more details, not weird pictures. My McAfee found nothing, but my PC is still slow.

Okay, that 'smiler' image is actually kinda creepy after seeing it a few times. What's the deal, @smalice_hvr? You trying to scare us?

January 18, 2001

I downloaded Kitties 3D from a torrent site last month. No issues here. Maybe it's just a bad download or something? Are you guys sure it's not just a file issue or something that isnt fear mongering??

zozo_png
January 18, 2001

@coffee4two - YES! My ZoneAlarm keeps popping up alerts for some weird IP. What IP is it trying to connect to on your end?

CatLoverForever
January 18, 2001

@CatObsessed - I know, right?! My favorite is the fluffy Persian. I spend hours just watching her sleep. She's so peaceful. I don't care about viruses, I just want my Fluffykins to be happy! She's the best virtual pet ever!

This is getting out of hand. That smiler image is popping up everywhere now. Stop posting it in the forum guys it isnt funny, its ruining the kitties 3d legacy.

lucylovesbooks
January 20, 2001

@stillonline4am - Highly unlikely. Probably just some dumb troll trying to get a rise out of people. Focus on the actual technical issues. For those affected, try a boot-time scan with a reputable antivirus. Norton or McAfee are usually good.

mk_writer

I saw that smiler image on another forum too. It's weird. Maybe it's a new internet meme? Like that dancing baby thing?

boredatthedesk
January 21, 2001

Kitties 3D seemed so innocent. Who would put a virus in a cat game? This is messed up. I just wanted to chill with some virtual kitties, not get my PC messed up.

ellie.kt
January 21, 2001

I'm analyzing the Kitties 3D executable. So far, nothing definitive, but there are some suspicious API calls. Will update if I find anything solid. Ignore the smiler stuff for now, it's a distraction from the real problem.

ash_coder_84

Still no official word from any antivirus companies. This site is the only place reporting this. Is it really the problem or just some hoax?

I'm pretty sure it's an ARG, guys. The smiler image is part of it. This whole site is probably part of it. Pretty cool, actually. You gotta look for the clues!

What's an ARG? My computer is still messed up. This isn't a game to me! I'm losing work!

kjturner77
January 24, 2001

I deleted Kitties 3D, and my computer seems to be fine now. Maybe it's just a badly coded game, not a virus? Like, a memory leak or something?

junkinmysoul
January 25, 2001

@kjturner77 - Could be. But the network activity reports are concerning. Keep an eye on your firewall logs. Bad code doesn't usually try to connect to random IPs.

CatWhisperer
January 25, 2001

My Siamese cat in Kitties 3D just learned a new trick! She can now chase the laser pointer! This game is so realistic. I spend more time with her than my real cat. Haha! Sometimes I hear her purring even when the game is off, but that's just my imagination, right?

Okay, I'm seeing some unusual data packets being sent out by the Kitties 3D process, even when the game isn't actively running. This is NOT good. It's subtle, but it's there. Still no virus signature match though, which is weird.

garageecho
January 27, 2001

So it IS a virus? Or is it the smiler image? Sorry to ask.

midwesternerghost
January 27, 2001

@coffee4two @zozo_png - I'm seeing outbound connections too, to a strange IP. 192.168.1.254? That's a LOCAL address. This is getting weirder. It's trying to connect to something *on your own network*.

The network packets from Kitties 3D... they're not just random. They seem to be trying to establish a connection to an unknown IP. I'm tracing it now. This is bigger than just a virus. This is organized.

coffee4two
January 29, 2001

@midwesternerghost - 192.168.1.254 is a local IP. That means it's trying to connect to something *on your own network*. Check your router logs! This is BAD. Like, really bad.

My favorite cat in Kitties 3D, Mr. Fluffington, just started meowing at me through my speakers! It's like he knows I'm here. This game is a masterpiece, I tell you! He even responded when I whispered his name. My real cats never do that. He's so real!
